There are 5 museums in Mazamet to help you understand wood working and crafts, Catharism, the prime importance of wool in Mazamet’s history, and medieval times.

« Maison du Bois et du Jouet » - Wood & Toys

Situated at the foot of the medieval village of Hautpoul and of the Himalayan gateway (15mn on foot by the GR7) and near from the river, a World of Wood and Toys welcomes you for a playful experience, from the forest to the tree, from the tree to the wood and from the wood to the toy. Discover more than 2000 games et toys from all around the world all in wood from yesterday to nowadays.
Exposition: Doll houses. Come discover 31 houses from different eras, Tudor, Georgian, American… and contemplate this universe.
The visit ends in a huge game room, kids and adults can find again the joy of playing in family. More than 40 games are available (billiards, skill games, board games). An area is reserved for toddlers.
In the shop, you will find a huge choice of wooden objects, games, toys from the production of more than 20 French craftsmen presenting their savoir-faire.
Outdoor: Arboretum (50 species of the Black Mountain), picnic areas and playful tours (wood of tales and wood of fables de La Fontaine). Free Access.
School holidays, all French zones: open every day from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Maison des Mémoires / Maison Fuzier

In the heart of the city center, the Maison des Mémoires, also known as Maison Fuzier, invites you to discover the Mazametan heritage through the Cathar Museum and the three exhibition halls with free access:
- the salons of Admiral Jules Fuzier,
- models of castles from Cathar Country of Edgard Fuchs,
- temporary exhibitions on local heritage.
All spaces are accessible to people with reduced mobility.

From 01/02 to 31/03: Open Tuesday to Friday from 10h to 12h and from 14h to 17h.
From 01/04 to 30/06 and from 1/09 to 31/10: Open Monday to Friday from 10h to 12h and from 14h to 17h.
July / August: Open Monday to Saturday from 10h to 12h and 14h to 18h.
Sundays from 21/07 to 18/08 and 15/08: Open from 10h to 12h and from 14h to 18h.

Musée du Catharisme Occitan - Cathar Museum

In the centre of Mazamet, on the first floor of this beautiful 19th century residence, the Cathar Museum, will help you to understand the tragic story of the Cathars.  Follow the Faithful, bons hommes and bonnes femmes, and learn about their beliefs and rituals.  The visit is richly illustrated with full surround sound and two videos (in French) and is based on the story of the medieval village of Hautpoul. (Air-conditioned and accessible to people with reduced mobility.)

Musée départemental du Textile - Textil Museum

In an old 19th century textil factory, in the middle of the Parc Naturel Régional du Haut-Languedoc, the Departemental Textil Museum is a witness of the wealth, the know-how and the industrial heritage in Tarn. The collections show the technics of woolen from the transformation of the raw material to the finished product. The visit is animated by demonstrations of machines with a team of ancient workers who communicate their passion for their work. Temporary exhibitions and working groups complete the visit and give information to the visitors about the textil arts and technics from all over the world.

From 1st March to 30th April: open from Wednesdays to Sundays,2pm- 5pm.
From 2nd May to 30th June: everyday except on Tuesdays,10am-12am and 2pm-6pm.
From1st July to 31st August: 10pm-12.30pm and 2pm-7pm.
From 1st September to 31st October: everyday except on Tuesdays, 10pm-12pm and 2pm-6pm.
From 2nd November to 23rd December: open from Wednesdays to Sundays, 2pm to 5pm.
Closed from 1st January to 28th or 29th February.
You must book for groups (except when it is closed).
