Walk through time on two history tours of Mazamet.

Follow that wool

In the middle of the nineteenth century Mazamet experienced an extraordinary industrial boom. Influenced by the Reformation, the city developed a textile industry of the highest quality. And it was around 1850 that destiny struck. An industrialist, a certain Pierre-Elie HOULES imported Argentinean sheep-skins and perfected a technique for separating the wool from sheep skins: fellmongery (délainage.) This led to the economic and financial miracle that shaped Mazamet over the next hundred years.
Follow this amazing story by walking these two history tours:
" Mazamet au fil de la laine " which reveals a unique urban development which was entirely devoted to the service of its industry. Admire the elegant mansions inspired by Parisian architecture built alongside huge wool warehouses, and also superb residences from the 30s inspired by Argentinian and Uruguayan “estancias.”
